These coatings require a thorough surface preparation to remove loose top layer of concrete as well as any surface contamination, so resinous mix can bond well to concrete mechanically and chemically. Acceptable methods of preparation are shotblasting and diamond grinding. They require specialized, expensive equipment like shotblasters, concrete grinders and industrial vacuum extractors to prepare the surface well and efficiently. Not often a homeowner has access to such equipment and/or skills to use it. Acid etching, suggested at times as alternative, is an inferior prep method , requires use of aggressive and dangerous muriatic acid with subsequent neutralization.
Mixing and applying components of epoxy flooring system needs to be done in a very specific manner, under certain conditions and in time-constrained situation. As soon as components are mixed, chemical reaction begins immediately, and installer has a very limited time to work with it. Without prior experience, a mistake in mixing or application may create a hell of a mess. Remember: improperly mixed epoxy will NEVER cure. Once hardened, epoxy coat may only be removed by mechanical means (I.e. you will have to grind it all off).
Without experience, other issues may arise. To name a few, fish eying, blushing, pinholes, uneven coverage, poor adhesion, streaks, uncured areas, spotty flake coat etc. etc.
If a two or three coat system is being installed, installer must strictly follow compatibility and observe times to recoat.
